The LuminAreas are street lanterns that confront community concerns about safety, lighting, and the speed of traffic in our neighborhoods. The lanterns house solar-collecting LED bulbs that sense light levels and the nearby movement of cars and people. Each LuminArea has a unique shade, with words and sentiments derived from the voices of the neighborhood as well as a map of the installation. Perched along unlit utility poles at a scale more responsive to the pedestrian, these handmade lanterns will brighten, pulse, and dim as people and vehicles pass by. By creating a twinkling nighttime lightscape along the 6th street corridor, the LuminAreas will bring awareness to the streetscape.
